The new elements and nuclei will complete the seventh row of the periodic table, and provides evidence for the long sought 'island of stability' for superheavy elements. Tennessine has been announced as the provisional name for periodic table element 117. This discovery brings the total to five new elements reported by the Dubna-Livermore team (114, 115, 116, 117 and 118, the heaviest element to date). The LLNL/JINR team then jointly worked with researchers from the Research Institute for Advanced Reactors (Dimitrovgrad), ORNL, Vanderbilt University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to discover element 117 in 2010. LLNL worked again with JINR in 2006 to discover element 118. LLNL teamed with JINR in 2004 to discover elements 113 and 115 (Japan was credited with the discovery of element 113).

The provisional name for element 118 is Oganesson (Og) in recognition of the pioneering contributions of Yuri Oganessian to superheavy element research. Tennessine (Ts) is proposed for element 117, recognizing the contribution of Tennessee research centers ORNL, Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee to superheavy element research. Moscovium (Mc) is provisionally recommended for element 115 in recognition of the Moscow region and honoring the ancient Russian land that is home to JINR. The new element doesnt have an official name yet, so scientists are calling it ununpentium, based on the Latin and Greek words for its atomic number, 115. The most stable isotope of ununpentium, Uup-289, has a half-life of approximately 200 msec. No name has yet been adopted for element 115, which is therefore called ununpentium, from the Latin roots un for one and pent for five, under a convention for neutral temporary names proposed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in 1980. Oganesson is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Og and atomic number 118. Swedish researchers from Lund Univ., in a 2013 experiment at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt, Germany, largely replicated the 2003 results, producing ununpentium-288. Ununpentium-289 and ununpentium-290 have also been produced (2009) at Dubna by alpha-particle decay of ununseptium. Among the products of the bombardment were one atom of ununpentium-287 and three atoms of ununpentium-288, each of which in less than one tenth of a second decayed into atoms of ununtrium by emitting an alpha particle. They bombarded atoms of americium-243 with ions of calcium-48.

In a 27-day experiment in 2003, scientists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California collaborated in the discovery of ununpentium.
